Fun Nail Friday!

Is Ombré SOOOOOOO last year? Maybe so, but who has pink tips and don’t give a care? This guy.

Therefore, I’m going to ombre the crap out of my things until the cows come home. I saw this really cute neon ombre nail look on Pinterest, but I had a little trouble as my neons are just too neon, if that makes any sense. It was kind of hard to get that perfect fade, so let’s just go ahead and say these are neon two-toned nails.

2ToneSo even though it’s set to be a cold as hell weekend in Southern California, this bright mani has me dreaming of warm summer nights.

Have a great weekend!

Fun Nail Friday!

Holy balls, can you believe we reached 2012’s halfway point? I can’t. I still remember New Years Eve, stumbling drunk around the streets of San Francisco at 3am begging anything on wheels to give me a lift back to my friend’s apartment. To this day I still do not know what happened, but I guess it turned out alright.

Today we tackle some of the biggest trends in nails: Ombre and Tribal design!

Dots, lines, and other designs are made much easier with your Sally Hansen nail art pen.  They’ve come out with almost 20 colors since first introducing the product a year or two ago. Some colors work better than others, and I’ve heard the Pink pen is really good, especially after 50 shades of top coat.

I decided to do an ombre nail this week. I’ve found that it’s much easier to use two very pastel colors for your design, as the colors seem to fade into each other better. For this I used a light OPI pink and also “I Have a Herring Problem.”

Here’s what you’ll need:

A piece of foil, base coat, top coat, your 2 ombre colors, and a flat eyeshadow brush. I happened to have one lying around that I never used. Paint your nail with the lighter of the two colors, let it dry, and then mix a little of your darker nail polish shade with base coat on the foil. This will thin the color out. Brush on halfway down your nail, and repeat, using less base coat each time, and moving closer to your nail’s tip. At the very tip of your nail, brush on the darker color with no base coat mixture.

When I finished, I thought it looked a little weird, but once I put the top coat on and looked at it from a distance, it looked really good. No one will be able to tell they aren’t airbrushed! 🙂 This is a great look and there’s a ton of colors you can use. It was fail proof, which I appreciated. I tried a makeup sponge ombre manicure eariler (a variation of this DIY post I talked about in March) and it didn’t work at all. I still want to try it with a kitchen sponge, though.

Happy Friday and holy crap—SUMMER’S HERE! 🙂

Fun Nail Friday!

Happy Friday! Today is so special, because as you may have heard, the date is 11/11/11. There will never be a palindrome date like this again until…oh…11 days later. #Fetch

On to today’s fun nail look! You’ve heard of ombre hair color, the trendy look in which hair color is applied in such a way that the darker roots blend into a lightened mid-shaft and end. Ombre translates to “gradation” in French, and can be seen all over the runways, in both the clothes and the hair.

And now…on nails! Here’s what I did to create this fresh look.

Step 1: Choose a starting color. This time I decided to go with a skanky purple polish. You’ll also need a white and black polish for your tint and shade.

Step 2: Use some kind of makeshift item as a palette (I used a shave ice or snow cone cup) to do your polish mixing. Add in drops of the polish and mix the colors to your liking.

Step 3: Take a break. Go on, you deserve it!

Since every store is pimping out Cupcake wines, so will I!

Step 4: Carefully, before the paint dries on your ghetto palette, apply your mixed color to nails, saving one nail for the original polish color. I painted the original color (we’ll call it Purple Skank) on my index finger.

What a fun, original look for your nails! A little stressful to recreate at times, but hey, that’s the life of an artist, right?
