Benefit b.right! Product Review

I’ve been using Benefit’s new skincare line “b.right” for about 2 weeks now, and I think it’s time I have a little review ready for you.

As I mentioned before, I was initially interested in sampling this line because a) I was desperately out of moisturizer, b) I’ve had great times with other Benefit products in the past, and c) the packaging is lovely, like anything else from Benefit.

b.right sampler, $24

The set comes with 6 pieces broken up into 3 categories of care:

Cleansing

  • Foamingly Clean Facial Wash: I loved the smell of this cleanser. It’s got a faint scent that smells just like Ralph by Ralph Lauren. It smells like a cool spring morning (picture that?!) My face felt squeaky clean after cleansing, and every morning and night I’d be like “F*ck Yes!!! I have the most amazing face in the UNIVERSSSSSSSSSSE…” Followed by a meltdown over having to brush my teeth.
Sample size: 0.3 oz; Full size: 4.5 oz, $21. My verdict: Splurge on full-size.
  • Refined Finish Facial Polish: This is a once a week scrub intended to exfoliate and minimize the appearance of pores. I can appreciate the exfoliation part, but at my age I’m not too worried about the size of my pores (Are they even there? Don’t know. Don’t care. Yet!) I think this product has good intentions, but I found myself being annoyed at how hard it was to get every speck of sugar/mud off my face.
Sample size: 0.3 oz; Full size: 4.5 oz, $22. My verdict: Try the sample, but use St.Ives if you don’t like it.

Moisturizing

  • Moisture Prep Toning Lotion: I must be a heathen, because when I read the instructions for this sample kit, I scoffed at the fact that I’d need a toning lotion to put on BEFORE my moisturizer. “Uh, moisturizer is the thing you use to prime your face, idiots,” I thought to myself. Oh, how wrong I was. I used the toning lotion before putting moisturizer on one side of my face, and then applied just moisturizer on the other. It actually made a HUGE difference in my skin! The toned side was much softer and I felt downright luminous.

    Yes, "Tangled" boat scene luminous!!

Would I normally buy toning lotion? Eh, I don’t think so. But I’m a new fan now.
Sample size: 0.3 fl oz; Full size: 6 fl oz, $29. My verdict: At least try the sample.

  • Total Moisture Facial Cream: Provides a heavy dose of hydration. And I do mean heavy. And I do mean hydration, because after slathering on a light layer, my upper lip started beading with perspiration and I needed a drink of water. It’s nice and feels like a true moisturizer, but when layered over the toning lotion, it feels SO heavy. I might have to skip this when it gets hotter here in California.
Sample size: 0.1 oz; Full size: 1.7 oz, $38. My verdict: Sample is good enough, especially since you’ll be using it so sparingly.
  • Triple Performing Facial Emulsion SPF 15 PA++: Is the most intimidating product in this set for me, because I’m not exactly sure what it does. I’m going to take an educated guess and say it’s just like the other moisturizer, but with SPF, therefore it’s for daily morning use. As for the PA++? It protects the skin from sun damage with UV-A and UV-B filters. Alright, then. All I do is use this in the AM instead of the Total Moisture Facial Cream.
Sample size: 0.3 fl oz; Full size: 1.7 fl oz, $28. My verdict: Lighter than the TMFC moisturizer, so yay!

Eyes
  • It’s Potent! eye cream: Contains enough Chinese anti-aging remedies and fruit extracts to make a delicious, low-cal dessert. ONLY KIDDING, do not eat under any circumstances.

    Try this instead!

This product is mainly intended for restoring elasticity to tired, sagging eyes. I’m still pretty young, so I can’t say I saw any kind of result using this product. However, the sample size does last forever, so that’s great. I use barely a dab.
Sample size: 0.1 oz; Full size: 0.5 oz, $32. My verdict: Not unless you need it!

There it is in a nutshell! I’m off to buy refills for my favorite b.right products.

Products We’re Excited For!

As I may have mentioned, I’ve been freaking out since I ran out of moisturizer. I tried philosophy’s “Hope in a Jar,” but after just a day, I had to return it because the smell was overpowering. Its hard to describe what it smelled like, but just think of how a burp from a flesh-eating plant would smell like and you’re about halfway there. Don’t worry about me though, I’m surviving on moisturizer samples from online orders past.

However, I did order a little something to get me back in the game, and I’m really excited for it.

Benefit cosmetics is pretty much good at everything, and I’ve never tried their skincare products before, so why not? I’ve heard really good things about their “Dear John” moisturizer for years, but never got a chance to try it. It’s been since discontinued.

The entire b.right! line

I’m not gonna lie, it’s the packaging that attracted me to this 6-piece skincare set. I’m totally gonna line them up on my bathroom sink and pretend I’m sending messages in a bottle. You might even see me singing into the mirror holding my necklace shell.

Soon I'll have that little mermaid and good skin will be MINE!!!

This intro set includes: Foamingly clean facial wash, refined finish facial polish, moisture prep toning lotion, triple performing facial emulsion, total moisture facial cream, and their potent eye cream. I’ll let you know how this all goes!

Beauty Resolutions We Can All Keep!

Well, of course we did not lose those 20 pounds this year that we promised ourselves, but really, who did? Setting lofty goals like that are challenging, but unless you have the sheer willpower of a dieting stoner, they may as well be impossible. Hey, I never said being more positive was on my to-do list!

Therefore, I’d like to bring to your attention some beauty resolutions that I call “The Bradley Coopers,” basically because they are just so doable.

  • BC #1: Wash your face before bed. Right, like anyone has to be reminded of that…wrong! I know an alarming amount of people who do not do this (you know who you are)! I feel icky if I go to bed with mascara clumps. By the time I roll into bed it’s long dried and will quietly flake off in my sleep, but that is not okay. This is America, people. They make eye makeup remover for a reason! I suggest: Target’s Up & Up makeup wipes, less than $4 for a 30-pack.

  • BC #2: Moisturize. I hear this is the key to not looking like an old hag when you’re in the prime of your life. If your goal is to be carded forever, then moisturizing is for you. And for less vain people, it also helps prevent premature wrinkles & damage to your skin from chemicals. So unless you had some kind of traumatic moisturizing experience as an at-risk youth, you should be moisturizing at least 2 times a day. And for extra credit, moisturize with SPF. I suggest: Philosophy’s “Hope in a Jar” for $38.50 or Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion w/ SPF 15 for $15-20.

  • BC #3: Clean your makeup brushes at least once a month. I admit, I have a hard time with this one. Almost all of my makeup brushes are from MAC, and when I first got them, I didn’t want to use them at all, since I had to mortgage my house to afford them. Now that they’re older and broken in, I don’t take care of them like I used to, so they quickly get caked with layered color and who knows what else. I learned that cleaning your brushes properly can actually save you money! By keeping them clean, you’ll use less makeup (makeup won’t stick to your oily brush), you’ll minimize skin problems (therefore not needing to use as much makeup), and they will last longer in general. Many companies sell specialized brush cleaners, but soap & water will also do the trick. I suggest: MAC Cosmetics Brush Cleanser for $13 for an 8oz bottle. Lasts forever.

  • BC #4: Stop touching your face. I totally get it. You’ve taken my advice about moisturizing, and now you can’t get enough of how soft your face feels. But you must refrain! Germs on your hand make their way into your body through your eyes, nose, or mouth. Blink the wrong way & you’ll get a cold or even worse–the flu. Also, you could be spreading oil around, planting a field of pimples while you graze.
  • BC #4A: Stop picking your pimples. People say it’s theraputic, but I don’t see any benefit to this. Giving yourself blemishes is so two thousand and late.
  •  BC #4B: Stop picking your lip, or any other destructive habit. This one’s for me. I am notorious for picking at the little patch of skin at the center of my upper lip. It’s my tick. I pick at it when I’m bored, nervous, and/or anxious. The skin always grows back, but the area still maintains its redness. One way I’ve tried to combat this is by always wearing lip balm, gloss, or lipstick. It helps, but when it all wears off, its free game again. I really MUST get better at this…
  • BC #5: Try to look together, all the time. Let’s work on this one together. There are some days where you roll out of bed, middle finger in the air, thinking “F*** today!” You leave the house with a hoodie on, no makeup, and you don’t even care. Other days, you wake up early to curl/flat iron your hair, apply a full face of makeup, and take your time picking out the perfect outfit. We need to find some middle ground here. I wear makeup 99% of the time, this is true. But I’m not talking “Kim Kardashian goes to the grocery store” makeup. For every day, I opt for moisturizer, mascara, eyeliner, blush, brows, and gloss. For special days, I opt for my every day look + foundation. For slummy days, I opt for just moisturizer and mascara. It still makes a difference. By putting some effort into how you look every single day will reflect kindly upon yourself. Believe it! You may just run into your very own BC one day, and you really don’t want to be looking like the evil hag version of yourself!

Hey Whipple! Moisturize this!

You know how the saying goes, “Wear the right moisturizer and you’ll have everyone eating out of the palm of your hand.”

Looks like someone overdid it.

Anyway, the perfect moisturizer smooths your face to a level of dewy deliciousness usually reserved for babies and male strippers.

The perfect moisturizer will never do you wrong.

The perfect moisturizer will be your best friend.

The perfect moisturizer WILL change your life.

I think I found the perfect moisturizer.

Not pictured: magic wand.

Meet MAC’s Studio Moisture Creme Hydrante, a super-rich moisturizer infused with a ton of delicious extracts like green tea and algae that cosmetics companies just LOVE to throw in there to make us feel all nourished and healthy (VEGAN agenda?!). I’ll let it slide this time because this stuff is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Do you know how OUT OF THIS WORLD this moisturizer is? It compelled a gay man to approach me in front of the Nordstrom at Main Place Mall in Santa Ana and tell me that my face “looked like it felt like butter.”  (And yes, I totally let him cop a feel.)

Anyway,  I really do love how my face feels after I slather this on. I feel like I’m literally feeding my dry, thirsty skin with the tastiest, most refreshing beverage ever. I’ve never used a moisturizer that was so thick and creamy and radiant and just makes my face feel dewy. And the best part? Since it’s so thick, I barely go through one tub a year. </endgushfest>

Oh, you’re still here? Thought you’d already dropped everything you were doing to get out to a MAC store or logged onto MAC Cosmetics online to get yourself a little tub of the magic!
