Fun Nail Friday!

Hello there!

Since I’ve been eyeball-deep in Wedding nonsense lately, I thought it would be only fitting if I tried out some options for my “Something Blue.” However, as usual…I think I need to calm down. After all, Kate Middleton would never wear these crazy chevrons on her wedding day…right?

Speaking of things to do…guess who’s going to Ireland in just two short weeks!

Don’t worry about packing warm clothes, girl, just let the Guinness do all the work for you! I wonder if C.H. is gonna find her a pot of gold? I know L.D.L. hopes she does!

Fun Nail Friday!

Happy Friday!

I feel like I’ve been neglecting my nifty rhinestone wheel, so I had to make sure I included it on this week’s nails, along with a curious nail decal tub I picked up the last time I was at the nail supply store. It’s like…a sequin, but softer. It’s like…confetti, but harder. I don’t know. I just thought it kind of looked like a minimalist snowflake. And can I just say…I’m surprised my rhinestones stayed on with all the online shopping I’ve been doing. I refuse to go into stores this season. I REFUSE.

Something I’ve been entertaining the idea of getting are nail protectors, because more often or not, I paint my nails, and then realize 5 minutes later that I need to a) use the bathroom b) wrestle my hair into submission or c) do something Pinterest related. It doesn’t matter what kind of fast drying top coat or nail drying spray you have, nothing quite perfects a manicure like letting it dry for 5 hours without any interruptions. I can’t explain why it takes 10 minutes at the nail salon but 5 hours at home, but that’s life, I guess.

Then I saw an infomercial for Nails in Motion and I’m not gonna lie…I want to try it! It looks silly, but it solves a very real (first world) problem for me! I’ll update when I get it! 🙂

Fun Nail Friday!

9 time zones, 6 cities, 3 weeks, 28 hours in the air, and 1 engagement ring later I am home! On a scale of 1 to Adele, I’m very sad to be back. Haha! Thanks for hanging in there 🙂

Let’s catch up on all the nails we missed. Who’s ready for the new Bond film?! I am!!! And I LOVE the new theme song too!

LDL’s off frolicking in the Mediterranean right now, but we did get to meet up on a rainy evening in Paris at Le Relais de l’Entrecôte for some delicious steak frites. Yum!

Speaking of, I’m so excited that fall has FINALLY arrived in Los Angeles. I managed to miss the days earlier this month when it was over 100 degrees, and I’m sorry to report that we have brought the rain over from Europe, where it literally rained every other day on our trip. Bah! I’m still pretty sick and jetlagged, but I was really excited to paint my nails in fall colors.

Obligatory ring pic!

SPEAKING of other things that happen in Fall, EKF is suuuuuuuuuuuuper excited for football!

I, on the other hand, am very excited to have the TV to myself on Sundays. Go (Area Team)!

Here’s some trip highlights from our adventures abroad 🙂

Fun Nail Friday!

And the boy band war rages on.

Somehow, 15 years later, my friends and I have taken to Facebook to argue which boy band was better: *N Sync or the Backstreet Boys. Things are getting heated and friendships are in jeopardy. Exhibit A:

  • CH: M, fun fact for you. Your boy, Chris Kirkpatrick is 40. vomit.
  • M: He will be 41 on October 17. And I’d still stick it. Hahah!
  • LDL: ‎41?!?!? Gag! Hah yeah, you would. I totally remember TRL days, when Backstreet Boys was always #1 😉
  • M: #1?! Puh-leeeez!!! They can’t even dance!

    T: TRL wasn’t a dance off!
  • M: obvi! but the fact that they COULD dance was an added bonus. What did your backstreet boys even do?! wear white flowy outfits and sing in airports? 🙂
I apologize to you, readers, for posting that, but I just wanted to share how absolutely ridiculous this all is. Glad it didn’t carry on to our nails…
Oh snap, it did! Sorry M, but BSB fo’ life. Why? Nick Carter’s hair in the 90s, that’s why. That thing was a beautiful, shining golden forest that unicorns and pop music come from. LOVE! 🙂
    LDL agrees:

Ode to Nick Carter’s glorious golden 90s middle part hair do.

Anyone else have anything to add? Any more boy bands to throw into the argument? Oh yeah. Everyone’s favorite boxing boy band, 98 degrees, is reuniting! I hope they leave the ugly one out of this. On to the nails…this FNF submission is from a guy who’s sick of our yammering about which boy band was better. He has a clear favorite:

So I know there was a lot of talk this week about boy bands and who’s better than who and I thought I’d just remind you all that (aside from NKOTB) 98º actually started the boy band craze of the late 90’s. In honor of them I dub my FNF submission, The Invisible Man’s Invisible Nail Polish.

    Hahahaha! Genius.

One more side to the argument:

“The week was intended for TRL but we got a little crazy with the “my boy band is better than yours”. So let’s stop the warring and agree that we loved Mandy Moore back in the late 90s and even more after Tangled :)”

    ♥ CH the peacemaker

Oh fine. Give it up for 90s sensation Mandy Moore. I suddenly have the urge to curl up on the couch, watch “A Walk to Remember,” eat frozen tater tots, and cry. Estrogen Day, holler. Everybody needs a little of that every now and then!

Now that I’ve rehashed my life in 7th grade, I’m ready to move on. Girls, are you with me?

Fun Nail Friday!

Graduations, celebrations, inebriations…it’s hard to believe that May is almost over!

I bet no one’s happier than education super-being MKL. No more Coffee Mate for you until the Fall, missy. Congrats to you and your kiddies, and boo to the loser recording the ceremony on his iPad. Relax, pal.

Here’s your weekly dose of glittery goodness thanks to CH!

I’m in a poetic mood (too much Tylenol PM and bacon in my system as of late) so I posted this quote to my friends, which inspired this week’s FNF:

“The butterfly is a flying flower, and the flower is a tethered butterfly.”

I know, I know. I totally need to get my life CHECKED. But if I show you the mani will you understand?

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!! 🙂

Mela-What? Mela-Who?

I hereby interrupt your lovely holiday weekend to bring you news from a frightening article on Glamour that I read, because nothing puts the fear of God into me like telling me there might be CANCER in my nail beds.

Back to the beginning. Melanoma. It’s a less common (but just as bastardly) type of skin cancer that can occur anywhere in the body that contains melanocytes. What are melanocytes? Oh, just the melanin-producing cells hanging out in the bottom layer of our skin’s epidermis that are primarily responsible for the color of the skin.

Nothing to look at here, kids. Just plotting your demise!

If you polish your nails frequently (like I do), you may be missing a warning sign! Here are some things to look for when checking for melanoma in your nail beds:

  • Brown or black lengthwise stripe on the nail
  • Usually only one finger or toe is affected (and most often it is the index finger or big toe)
  • Brownish or black pigment surrounding the nail
  • African American and Japanese women have a higher risk of melanoma under the nail than any other ethnic group

And I have braved Google images to bring you an example:

I found it kind of funny that the picture was called "thumbnail."

After all of that, I think we kinda deserve to see some happiness, don’t you think? Enjoy and forget the nasty images you just looked at, but don’t forget to check yo’self the next time you take your polish off!

Nothing makes me happier to see a pug shitting cupcakes.

Why wasn't I born as this umbrella? Dammit, my life's a joke.

I'm hope this happy family is still smiling when they're on the inside of my belly.

Alright, I think I’m okay now. And I hope you are too.

Fun Nail Friday

Thankfully my health (but not sanity) has returned in time for this very special edition of Fun Nail Friday…Holiday Edition!

Let’s see what the most wonderful time of the year decided to puke up on our nails today, shall we?

Ornament in Death Grip

I decided to name this one “UGHHHHHHHHHH, holidays!” because that’s exactly how I feel right now about everything. “UGHHHHHHHHHH, washing dishes!” & “UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH, the crowded malls!” round out my emotions. This is pretty much a mishmash of everything holiday that I could think of.

But let’s start at the beginning:

I usually have an idea of what direction I want to go towards when I paint my nails. This time I did not. Clearly. So I just grabbed holiday colors and started painting. White nails?! Reverse french manicure?! What the what, this is so not me. I added on some glitter, snowflake nail design, and green rhinestones, and the look actually came together pretty nicely, for what this week’s theme was. And if you missed the memo, it is HOLIDAY EXPLOSION.

The girls decided to bring the crazy holiday goodness as well in their weekly manis:

MKL's "Bipolar Blues w/ a Side of Sugary Christmas Delight"

MKL hit it on the nose, because this is pretty much what everyone’s feeling right now. You know, feeling homicidal and eating too much sugar. I ❤ CHRISTMAS!

C.H.'s "Words with Friends" because she's all about the appropriate memos these days!

LDL reached into the deepest, darkest corner of her deranged mind & really brought the cray in this week’s ‘do.

"Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow All Over My Nails!" - She said nails but I knew she meant face...

Also, did you notice how obsessed with the iPhone collage app they are? I think it’s kind of amazing, so I decided to get in on the action as well.

Happy holidays…9 days til liftoff!

Fun Nail Friday

It’s my favorite time of the week: FRIDAY!

I’ve been casually obsessed with “The Tudors” this week, and so naturally, my nails needed to reflect that.

Here is “A Notch in Henry VIII’s Belt.”

Looks pretty, but lemme tell ya, it was a royal pain! Nails 1,2,3, & 5 were easy enough, I just gave them a couple coats of a deep red (an oldie but goodie: O.P.I.’s St. Petersburg), and then on each ring finger, painted half the nail in red, and half in a deep purple (O.P.I.’s Lincoln Park After Dark). I used acetone to perfect the division between the two colors, but it doesn’t need to be too precise, because I painted a line of gold glitter with a glitter nail pen to create a stately looking band. I topped everything off with a rhinestone. And there you have it. Regal nails fit for a drag queen. Here’s a close up:

Since my hands have all the steadiness of a 16th century surgeon, painting the ring finger was kind of tricky. But luckily, any flaws are easily covered up by the glitter band. What do you know…glitter coming to my rescue, as usual.

Themed nails are too much fun, but I’m not looking forward to the “Dexter” themed mani.. 🙂

Have a great weekend!

Nails Nails Nails

I am downright obsessed with nail polish. Years ago, when I was a fool, I would buy nail polish full-price from MAC, Macys, Ulta, OPI, you name it. I even spent $50 bidding on the it-color of the season: Chanel Black Satin nail polish.

You don't even want to know what I had to do to afford this in college...or do you?!

But those days have gone and now I find myself perfectly content with brushing off-brand polishes onto my nails. I’ve found a way around paying full price too, usually by buying polish and supplies directly from suppliers. I made quite a good haul this weekend so I thought I’d share my most recent manicure.

ULTA "Little Black Dress"

First, I painted a sparkly black polish onto my nails.

Bright blue sparkle polish

Then I added a bright blue glitter, concentrating its sparkly powers at the top of the nail, and then, with a lighter hand, painting some glitter going down the nail towards the cuticle. The effect I was going for was kind of like a falling star effect. I think it turned out pretty nice and subtle, and just in time for gloomy fall.

Here’s a clearer pic:

I’ll be sharing my DIY manicures weekly, just like I how do with my friends and our recently formed “Nail Club.” It’s like a book club, but with nail polish and no books and no club. What kind of DIY manicures are you hoping to try this fall?
